Rosa Louise McCauley Parks (February 4, 1913 – October 24, 2005) was an African- American civil rights activist. Ms. Parks was a 42-year-old worker in Montgomery, Alabama when she caught a bus on December 1, 1955. Shortly after she sat down, a white man got on the bus and had to stand. At that time, there were segregation laws which required African-Americans to make room for white passengers. Ms. Parks refused to comply with the bus driver’s demands for her to move. She said, “No, I am tired of being treated like a second-class citizen”. She was convicted of breaking the law. Therefore, she had to go to jail for one day and was fined $10. However, her act of bravery sparked a famous bus boycott that lasted 381 days. It also led to the end of segregation laws throughout America’s South. In 1956, the Supreme Court declared that African Americans could sit wherever they wanted. In 1964, the Civil Rights Act banned all racial discrimination in public places. The mayor of Detroit praised her courage and strength. He said she was a symbol of the civil rights movement. He also said: “Just by a simple act of sitting down she stood up for so many people”. Ms. Parks is called the mother of America’s civil rights movement. In 1999, the US Senate described her as a living icon for freedom in America.
She was the first person to challenge America’s segregation laws.
