A common belief that acquiring more material possessions earns us the esteem and admiration of others appear to be the exact opposite of the truth. Van Boven found that material people are more isolated. They have fewer friends and poorer quality friendships. In one experiment, strangers were paired for randomly and asked to have a conversation either about their possessions or their experiences. They who talked about which they had done warmed each other quickly while those who discussed the things they had went across as more selfish.
