Nowadays it is common to be asked for your email address, name or phone number in order to download software programmes. Most internet users seem willing to accept these terms. In my view, however, there are more drawbacks than benefits to this arrangement.
There are two main advantages of providing personal information to technology companies. First of all, on my own computer, all of my personal information, such as my full name and email address are already saved. This allows me to enter my personal details and receive the software I want quickly and with almost minimal interference, giving me a hassle-free experience. In addition, providing my email address enables the technology companies to inform me of special offers, discounts or new products, which can be useful. A further advantage is that there are a lot of high-quality programmes online that are totally free in exchange for some short personal information. For example, mobile games, recording software and many others only ask for your email address and then give you access to the software without any charges. Therefore, users who choose to provide their details can enjoy promotional offers and many free apps.
Despite those advantages, there are many concerning drawbacks to consider when sharing your information online. Although it is convenient and easy to provide personal information online, there is always a risk that your personal info will be shared without your permission or knowledge. Once in possession of your information, companies have been known to share or sell your details to other organisations. As a result, users could receive unwanted spam, advertisements or even viruses in their inboxes, as I have experienced on several occasions. Furthermore, while the quality of some free apps might be impressive, users can only access most leading software programs after they enter their bank account details. Again, this can put very important data at risk because hackers can access the company website to steal customers' information or even empty their bank accounts completely. Therefore, the threat of bank fraud or theft from hackers as well as unsolicited spam are not worth the risk.
In conclusion, there are some benefits that are provided to users, including special offers and the ability to enjoy free high-quality software programmes. However, the risk of receiving viruses and bank fraud is too high to make these offers worthwhile.
