These days, many companies and brands are using spam for advertising their products or services. Spam or commercial emails are sent to random customers. They often contain misleading subject lines and badly crafted messages. Even though it is a fast and cost-effective way of approaching customers, I consider it unethical.
Let us start by looking at the problems people face due to spam mails. One of the biggest disadvantages of such mails is that they are not targeted to the right people, and the recipient may delete your email or unsubscribe. Moreover, the ‘click through rate’ of such emails is likely to be very low. Hackers can use this method to spread viruses and malicious software hidden in e-mail attachments.
Another issue is that companies sending spams do not comply with privacy and data protection rules. The willingness of recipient to receive the mail is completely ignored by the sender. Hence, receiving these mails becomes troublesome as it irritates and annoys them. In addition to this, most of the time, there is no useful information provided in these emails. Sometimes it becomes difficult for the users to filter important mails from the inbox full of spam.
Turning to the other side of the argument, sending mails in bulk to a large group of customers repeatedly is the major advantage of a spam. This is a very cost-effective and eco-friendly method of advertising as no advertising cost and printing are involved.
All things considered, spam cause problems for the e-mail users. Instead of opting for advertising through spam emails, companies should go for other online marketing techniques. Personally, I believe the negatives of spam eventually outweigh any positives. In order to avoid it, people can have an updated antivirus program. Moreover, we should never share our email address and personal information with any unreliable source.
