Secondary school education nowadays focuses more on traditional subjects like history and pays less attention to communication skills and business courses. People say though that schools should focus more on the latter subjects than in the former. I completely agree with this opinion and this essay will focus on the reasons why I do so.

First, communication skills and business courses are vital in everyday life. Communication is something that people cannot do or live without. It is a constant in life, thus it needs to be honed and developed. Knowledge in business is also vital as the world today is all about enterprises. It is a must for people to know even a little about them.

Second, communication skills and business courses help us acquire abilities that are more relevant nowadays and are easier to practice and develop. In close relation to the first reason, the skill set that can be gotten from these subjects can easily be applied unlike other subjects. In short, the concepts can be practiced instead of just reading. Knowing them will never run out of fashion and will always be applicable.

Finally, skills learned from communication and business courses are advantageous to students in the long run, especially in building a career. Regardless of one’s career path, communication skills are important especially in interviews for jobs and later on in relating to co workers. As any kind of work involves a business, knowledge in it will also be valuable. Knowledge in these fields gives one an edge over others who do not.

Although learning one’s history is also important to build nationalism, I believe that learning communication skills and taking business courses in secondary school is more practical and advantageous. They will always be relevant as the world is becoming more and more globalized and industrialized. Therefore, schools should allocate more time on these subjects.
