Ngày nay có nhiều người nói được nhiều thứ tiếng, gọi là hyperglot, và con số này sẽ còn tăng nhờ toàn cầu hóa. Một câu hỏi trọng tâm là: người giỏi ngoại ngữ là do bẩm sinh hay do rèn luyện? Thành tựu của họ là do gen hay họ có những bí quyết mà người học bình thường có thể học hỏi?
Những người này thường có sẵn lợi thế bẩm sinh: trí nhớ tốt và bộ não xử lý âm thanh lời nói hiệu quả hơn. Tuy nhiên, để trở thành người giỏi nhất cũng cần rất nhiều nỗ lực.
