Shopping has become more common as a result of the introduction of large shopping malls. I strongly believe this has brought considerable economic benefits to society at large.
Since the advent of the mall, companies have relentlessly sought new ways to attract consumers, resulting in today’s megamalls. In the past, shoppers would make dedicated trips to specific stores for products. In the 1980s in the United States, the novel combination of shopping plazas and department stores with entertainment venues like state-of-the-art cinemas and appetizing foods courts made them the centre of social activity for a generation. It is therefore no wonder that youths and adults alike the world over opt to spend their time and money shopping at malls that cater to all their needs.
While some might argue that shopping is largely a waste of time, I feel that its economic advantages outweigh other concerns. Masses of wealthy middle-class consumers contribute greatly to economic prosperity and that brings various benefits to all socioeconomic classes. A counter-point illustrating this would be in Japan in the last two decades where a long recession has decimated the middle-class, leading to decreased shopping, closures of malls and a stagnant economy. The government has desperately lowered interest rates in order to stimulate the type of spending that malls encourage. Malls, as one crucial part of a consumer society, serve to encourage spending and national prosperity.
In conclusion, an increasing number of people frequent malls for their convenience and this boosts the economy. If governments were to invest more money in tax cuts this would further encourage spending at malls and help developing nations and developed ones whose growth has plateaued.

There is no denying the fact that people, nowadays, have become more shopaholic in comparison to the past years. In fact, in many parts of the world, shopping is a free-time activity for people, especially youngsters. According to me, it is a negative development although it has a few advantages as well.
Consumerism has become a trend among the masses and classes because shoppers buy things from a ‘luxury point’ of view but not out of ‘necessity. Primarily, teenagers intend to have quick access to everything which drags them to spend extravagantly. In a tendency to follow the herd, they buy things merely to show off but not according to their needs. Moreover, the super-hot deals and endless choices in gadgets, motor vehicles, and clothes lure them enormously. Most importantly, these days the availability of credit cards has facilitated the youngsters to buy more even during the non-availability of money in the account.
Shopping as a leisure activity is a positive development only when young adults manage their budget independently to fulfil their short-term goals of buying the gadgets or branded items they longed for. This urge to achieve their goals motivates them to work harder. Moreover, the satisfaction of coping with the up-to-date standard of living is another good reason for young folks to shop more.
However, the mindset of fulfilling unnecessary desires while shopping is a negative development for society as a whole. Since in the rat race of owning expensive things, youth ignore the investments and savings for the security of the future. Binge shopping further makes people spend much more than they actually afford, which submerges them in huge debts. Ultimately, all these things hamper their growth on professional and economic fronts.
To core out, it is certainly a negative development because the drawbacks of this leisure activity have the edge over the few immediate benefits. Savings are immensely important for one and all since the future is unpredictable and savings are a saviour in the unforeseen consequences.
Sample 3:
Nowadays, a lot of young people living in cities would rather spend their leisure time going shopping than doing other activities. This essay will explain the reasons for this tendency and examine its effects to see whether it is beneficial or harmful.
To start with, there are several causes that need discussing. Firstly, shopping can help release stress, also known as retail therapy. According to a study conducted with shoppers aged 25-35, stress relief is often attributed to the gratification of spending one’s own money on something they like or need, and the convenience of shopping centres. Secondly, compared to other leisure activities such as sports and reading, shopping does not cause constraints at all. This is because sports and reading both involve the idea of self-discipline while shopping does not, so it is often chosen over the other two.
This phenomenon produces the following effects, which have both positive and negative sides. Firstly, while shopping helps individuals reduce their mental pressure, it may also cause addiction. Secondly, while this tendency encourages economic growth, it may also create an imbalance among economic sectors. For instance, the amount of land used to build shopping centres would increase dramatically while land for factories and farms would be cut down. Therefore, it is clear that moderation plays an essential role here. On the one hand, going shopping to relax is a very good idea, but on the other hand, we should keep this habit under control.
In conclusion, shopping has become popular with young city dwellers as a leisure activity because it effectively helps with stress reduction. However, it is difficult to decide whether this trend is solely positive or negative. One thing we know for sure, though, is that it should be done moderately.
Sample 4:
Shopping has become the most desired medium of relaxation and enjoyment among teenagers across several nations. The reasons behind this trend will be discussed in the upcoming crumb of my writing along with some points which will clarify how it is a positive development.
To initiate with, the main reason why the youth is so inclined towards shopping is because they get to buy things of necessity in their leisure time as well as it helps them to feel relaxed. Shopping gives a sense of satisfaction to the buyers as by purchasing things, they feel they have control over things in their life. Moreover, people nowadays shop more than in the past whenever they are unoccupied as they have so many mediums to shop now and also have a wide variety to choose from. They can go to the malls, local marketplaces as well as can do shopping online on countless e-commerce websites such as Amazon, eBay and many more. It cheers them up as it changes their mindset or helps them to forget about the worldly worries momentarily. Moreover, youngsters nowadays have become fashion freaks, and they want to have the latest collection of dresses, shoes and accessories in their wardrobe. Some people find it extremely difficult to resist the tempting displayed new arrivals in stores even if they have enough of everything already.
To continue, shopping in spare time is indeed a positive development because research has shown that shopping actually helps to lift the mood and is a good stress buster. Recent studies have shown that shopping actually causes the brain to release more serotonin, a chemical that makes one feel good. Moreover, it keeps the economy boosted and the retail business on the go. So many masses get employment and business out of this habit or urge of shopping among the populace. Moreover, when people go shopping, they get to interact with so many people which helps them to reduce stress and lower stress levels are directly related to longevity. Also, shopping is a good form of exercise as when people shop, they walk around in huge malls and marketplaces which keep them physically active. Lastly, shopping is also known to improve mental acuity when people view and go through so many items.
To sum up, although shopping is called an expensive therapy by many, I believe that if one shops with discretion by comparing prices and buys only what he/she needs, it is a good activity to remain up-to-date about the latest ongoing trends and is also a good way to get rid of monotony and tensions.
Sample 5:
Nowadays, many younger adults in a lot of countries like shopping as a leisure activity. There are some reasons for this trend, but I think it is a negative trend and will explain in this essay.
One of the reasons is that young adults spend a lot of time using social media. In social media, many famous people, such as actors, professional sports players and models. advertise the products they use. Although there are many advertisements on TV before appearing on social media, the duration is much shorter than the advertisement on social media. In addition, famous people can interact with customers on social media, and they can advertise the products more effectively. Moreover, some of them even use hypo to attract consumers.
I believe this is a negative trend because it causes a decrease in exercise. These days, many people buy products online instead of going to shops since it is more convenient. Therefore, by this trend, they tend to stay at home and search for products online to buy the products they are promoted by famous people on social media as a leisure activity. As a result, they may have health problems, such as obesity and diabetes, leading to an increase in the death rate.
In conclusion, shopping becomes one of the most popular leisure activities because of the rise in the amount of time people spend on social media. In my opinion, it is a negative tendency since it causes health problems and heightens the death rate.
Sample 6:
As fashion evolves in the present world, shopping rises to become the most prominent recreation activity. This essay discusses the main causes for such and why I believe the arguments for its negative developmental nature are stronger.
There are two main reasons which are responsible for the growth of shopping among youngsters. Firstly, the low cost and high frequency with which new garments are released to encourage youth to constantly purchase items. For instance, trends are continuously updated on social media channels and television by exposing the new releases. In addition, youth feel peer pressure to fit in whenever their friends upload photos using new clothes to enhance social status. As a result, young adults end up spending more money and time buying to entertain themselves.
As purchasing increases, many negative impacts can be found in the social-environmental spectrum. For example, the increase in the rate of consumption implies several issues as manufacturers spend more energy and resources to meet demand. In addition, while the environment suffers as lakes and forests perish to provide factories with raw materials, our society becomes highly materialist as young individuals develop negative addiction to buying. As a result, the vicious cycle of buying becomes increasingly rooted in the younger generation’s cultural character.
In conclusion, as our society develops shopping rises to be deemed as the best hobby among the youth. I believe the negative developments of compulsive buying far outweigh the positive ones. Each individual, in my opinion, should be conscientious about the negative outcomes of consumerism as well as its addictive influence on human behaviours.
Sample 7:
In our modern society, the trend of spending the free time primarily on shopping among the youngsters has grown remarkably. Personally, I believe that the negative aspects of this tendency surpass the positive points. In my opinion, media influence and the ease of accessibility are the main reasons behind this development. In this essay, I shall critically examine the given topic and outline relevant examples to support my view.
To begin with, nowadays, the media have a significant influence on the people of the younger generation. Today, most of the advertisements shown on the television or the internet are targeted towards this particular age group. This greatly encourages the tendency to shop in one's spare time. For example, a recent study conducted at the Stanford University showed that due to the increased media influence, in the last decade, both offline and online shopping among the people of age 15 to 25 has risen considerably. These findings further illustrate the level of impact it has on young people.
Moreover, due to the recent advancements made in our mobile phone technology. It is now easier than ever to access online e-commerce websites on your cell phones. This is another reason behind this movement. In addition to this, a report published by the Oxford University press revealed that in the last 5 years, shopping apps for the mobile phones have witnessed a significant climb, due to the increased number of cell phone users, especially among the younger generation.
In conclusion, this is a topic which raises many questions in contemporary life. After a thorough analysis of the subject, I am inclined to say that the detrimental effects of this change cannot be denied, and thus it would be fruitful to search for possible solutions to this global problem.
Sample 8:
Most of the youngsters around the world, whether married or unmarried, consider shopping worthwhile to spend their free time. In terms of infrastructure advancement and luxury of an individual, I firmly believe that it is a good improvement of society. This essay discusses how the influence of shopping malls came into the picture and how it can help an individual youngster to develop himself or herself in society or family.
To begin with, in most of the urban areas the industrial evolution enabled employment on a very high scale which resulted in people who were able to earn a good salary, spend their time after working hours in malls, theatres and other entertainment activities. Thanks to the rapid changes in fashion, wares and trends, the malls became very popular among them. Furthermore, another reason could be the interest of an individual in expressing himself in a better version of himself when living in a populated area.
On the other hand, for an independent person, activities like shopping help to improve the aesthetic appearance which is an important for some of his personal and professional aspects. In addition to that, for a married couple, it gives a chance to spend their time with their partner and enables them to get to know about each other like their tastes, interests and preferences. Hence, in a way it can be agreed that this is a positive progress.
In conclusion, there are several reasons why youngsters now a days are showing much interest in shopping than any other entertainment activity. Although there are some environmental impacts because of shopping, the progress of the generation and they strive to project themselves in a good manner can be observed.
Sample 9:
Most of the youngsters are pursuing shopping as an activity to pass their leisure time. This trend is attributed to the increased use of adverts by companies to attract more and more buyers; however, it is a negative development because individuals- in this way- lose their financial resources, I believe.
Unprecedented use of advertisements is acting as a magnet to persuade adults to buy new things. Companies, these days, have endorsed their recently unveiled products with the help of film or sports celebrities with a view to enticing potential buyers. This practice has resulted in the sales of products being skyrocketed as people, especially adults, often tend to imitate their favourite stars and the products used by them. Hence, more and more people are purchasing new items. Prada- one of the largest internationally owned fashion chains- is using famous Hollywood Stars to embrace their products recorded a threefold rise in their sales as soon as they started promoting their products in this way.
However, shopping as an avocation can put an individual in a heavy financial strain. With the profound impact of commercials, youngsters are recklessly spending their earnings on the things, which they even do not need, making themselves grapple with their financial situation. Further use of plastic money to acquire new goods aggravates the situation as they eventually end up in heavy debt or often bankruptcy. In a recent research conducted by Bajaj Financery, it was revealed that young individuals usually overspend, making themselves fall prey to colossal debts.
In conclusion, adults are purchasing more and more items under the influence of advertisements, but it is, by and large, a negative phenomenon, given the economic strain it delivers to shoppers.
Sample 10:
In the modern-day western world, especially in the big cities, shopping is becoming increasingly popular as a leisure activity amongst young adults. This essay will discuss some of its most common reasons, such as higher disposable incomes and easy availability of cheaper goods in the big city. This essay will also argue why this is a positive development in today's world.
In many western countries, young adults, mainly millennials, have high disposable incomes owing to their well-paid jobs. This helps them spend more on shopping, mainly apparel and fast-moving consumer goods. In addition, the number of malls and supermarkets has been increasing significantly in the last decade or so, giving very easy access to affordable and good quality products. Due to these two factors combined, people have started considering shopping as one of the leisure activities that they pursue in their free times or over the weekends. For instance, a recent survey report states that more than 70% of young adults in big cities visit malls on the weekends for shopping.
The trend that an increasing number of young people are spending on shopping has created a high demand for various products in the market. This in turn has created more jobs and has been contributing to a stronger global economy. For example, the countries that manufacture apparel are seeing a higher demand for their products these days from the western nations to support their enhanced demand. Moreover, frequent shopping helps people keep up with the newest fashion trends, helping them boost their self-confidence. Thus, shopping, as a leisure activity, has positive impacts on societies as well as economies.
To conclude, many of the western countries are witnessing an increasing number of shoppers who buy things in their free time. This shift is being observed due to the emerging mall-culture and higher disposable incomes. Also, in my opinion, this is a positive development in the modern world as it is contributing to better societies and stronger economies.
