Read the passage and write A – E to indicate the paragraphs to which the following details belong.
A. Angkor was the capital city of the Khmer Kingdom from the 9th to 15th centuries in the 12th century. Emperor Suryavarman II wished to build Angkor Wat, which means ‘temple city’ in the Khmer language. This religious temple complex, which was considered the political center of his empire, took about 30 years to finish.
B. Angkor Wat is a splendid architecture. Constructed of sandstone, it has five central towers symbolizing five peaks of Mount Meru, which were believed to be the home of the gods. The walls have thousands of sculptures representing religious figures, activities and historical events.
C. In the 15th century, Angkor Wat was abandoned. However, when it was rediscovered in the 19th century, the ruins were not severely damaged. In the 20th century, there were many programs to restore the temple, but the war in the 1970s interrupted them. Work continued in the 1980s. International community, including experts from India, France and Germany, have joined hands with those in Cambodia in reconstructing and preserving the temples and the surrounding area.
D. In 1992, Angkor Wat was recognized as a world heritage site by UNESCO. At that time, UNESCO also added it to the World Heritage List in danger. However, in 2004, thanks to the preserving efforts, Angkor Wat was no longer in the danger List.
E. Angkor Wat is the pride of Cambodian people and has now become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Southeast Asia. Visitors from many parts of the world come here to admire a spiritual architecture representing once a splendid empire in the Southeast Asia. With an increasing number of tourists, Angkor Wat is now facing many problems with pollution and damage that require preventive solutions from the Cambodian government.
