In the folklore of the Navajo people, it was said that frogs and toads fell from the sky when it (1)________. Cultural beliefs differ as to whether directness or indirectness is considered positive. In the mainstream American culture, the ideal (1) ____ of communication includes being direct rather than indirect (“ideal” here means that the culture values this style, although not everyone speaks directly). Parents usually decide on given names for their children before they are born. In some families the oldest boy is given the same name as his father. When Tony Stark dazzled audiences by designing his Iron Man suit by simply picking up and chucking up holographic virtual gear in mid air instead of being hunched over a computer it was a perfect teaser into the future of gesture-based computing. What’s even more exciting is that most of this technology is already available and is set to go mainstream. Gesture-based computing is interacting with computers through non-traditional interfaces using the body instead of the mouse and the keyboard. It allows users to have no physical contact with a device and yet interact with it just as they would with traditional interfaces.

The most widely used of gesture-based computing devices and already a huge commercial success is the Kinect. Thanks to some amazing software that could extrapolate missing body parts and even tell different users apart, it went on to become a hit among gamers looking for the next big thing to enhance their gaming experience. The Kinect works by being able to map a body and produce a digital reproduction of a body’s shape, skeletal outline and even facial details that gives developers access to unlimited possibilities for interfaces and applications.

Another big contender in the gesture computing revolution is the Leap motion. Leap motion takes gesture-based computing to finger precision perfection. It reads gestures within a 8 cubic feet volume and any motion of the hand or fingers can be tracked to 1/100th of a millimeter, heralding exciting possibilities about its use with applications that require a higher degree of accuracy.

Gesture-based computing is now ripe to be a part of gaming, TVs, devices, kiosks, medical, 3D sculpting, engineering, medical professionals, designers, advertisers and even people with physical disabilities.

The tradition of gift giving is a worldwide practice that is said to have been around since the beginning of human beings. Over time, different cultures have developed their own gift giving customs and traditions.

In France, the gift of wine for the hostess of a dinner party is not an appropriate gift as the hostess would prefer to choose the vintage for the night. In Sweden, a bottle of wine or flowers are an appropriate gift for the hostess. In Viet Nam, a gift of whisky is appropriate for the host, and some fruit or small gifts for the hostess, children or elders of the home. Besides, gifts should never be wrapped in black paper because this color is unlucky and associated with funerals in this country. Gifts that symbolize cutting such as scissors, knives and other sharp objects should be avoided because they mean the cutting of the relationship. Also, in some countries you should not open the gift in front of the giver and in others it would be an insult if you did not open the gift.

Beyond the gift itself, give careful consideration to the manner in which it is presented. Different cultures have different customs regarding how a gift should be offered - using only your right hand or using both hands, for example. Others have strong traditions related to the appropriate way to accept a gift. In Singapore, for instance, it is the standard to graciously refuse a gift several times before finally accepting it. The recipient would never unwrap a gift in front of the giver for fear of appearing greedy.

Understanding these traditions and customs, as well as taking time to choose an appropriate gift, will help you to avoid any awkwardness or embarrassment as you seek to build a better cross-cultural relationship.
