In the late 1940s, despite many scientists understanding that DNA was the ‘molecule of life’, nobody knew what it looked like, and therefore people couldn’t understand how it worked. But a few years later it seemed that the problem had been solved by just two young scientists at Cambridge University.

In 1953, Francis Crick and James Watson claimed to have found ‘the secret of life’. For several years, they had been trying to identify the structure of DNA and they had just created a model which helped to explain how genetic information is coded on it. Their discovery amazed the scientific community and they were soon celebrated around the world. However, as is the case with most complex problems, the solution was only found after years of hard work by several people. In this case, the role of a scientist called Rosalind Franklin was crucial.

Along with Maurice Wilkins, Franklin worked at King’s College London, and the two had been using X-ray diffraction to study DNA for a number of years. Franklin presented some of her findings in a lecture in 1951, where James Watson was present. She also managed to take an X-ray photograph of DNA which was shown to Watson in 1953. Both of these incidents were critical to the development of Crick and Watson’s model, which began the incredible advances in molecular biology that continue to this day. However, while Watson, Crick and Wilkins received the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1962, many people believe that Franklin has never been properly credited.

AI-Powered Entertainment

AI has revolutionised the entertainment industry in recent years, presenting exciting new opportunities for creativity and innovation. The areas where AI is making waves are music, film and gaming.

In music, AI algorithms can analyse vast amounts of data to identify patterns and produce unique compositions. As an example, AI technology has given rise to completely new kinds of tunes that humans have never come up with. [I] AI programmes can also learn from existing songs to develop new ones that fit certain music styles. 

In the film industry, AI has been applied to create stunning visual effects and improve the efficiency of production processes. [II] By illustration, AI algorithms are able to review footage and automatically identify and remove errors. [III] Plus, AI can be employed to design realistic digital environments and characters, enabling filmmakers to bring their visions to life in ways that were previously impossible. 

Video games are where AI could make the biggest difference. AI algorithms can be used to create new levels, characters and items in games, providing endless possibilities for players. [IV] Additionally, AI can assess players’ behavior and preferences, allowing game developers to offer personalised experiences for each player. 

There are some concerns about the use of AI in entertainment. Some fear that AI-generated content could lead to a lack of creativity and originality, for instance, and there is a risk that human creators will lose their jobs. However, most people agree the potential benefits of AI far outweigh these worries.

As technology continues to advance, we can anticipate even more innovative applications of AI in music, film, gaming and other areas of entertainment. The key will be to find a balance between the benefits of AI and the potential risks, while continuing to push the limits of what is possible in the world of entertainment.
