WILDLIFE CONSERVATION NEWS |
1. Saving Sea Turtles: Volunteers Unite on Con Dao Island More than 600 volunteers participated in sea turtle conservation activities held on Con Dao Island last week. Volunteers made sure that their spawning ground is safe. They also rescued turtle eggs and buried them in the sand. Sea turtles are threatened with extinction worldwide, and their populations have decreased dramatically in many places. That is why sea turtle conservation programmes are organised annually around the world. They attract many volunteers and help raise public awareness about the threats to sea turtle species. |
2. Restoring Life Beneath the Waves: Coral Reefs in Nha Trang to Thrive Again Local authorities are taking measures to restore the coral reef ecosystem in Nha Trang Bay. They will organise regular clean-ups of the seabed and removal of marine debris. Diving clubs will also help by having their professional divers collect broken pieces of coral, re-grow them in underwater nurseries, and then re-attach them to reefs. Coral cover is expected to increase, which will help restore natural habitats and promote marine biodiversity in the bay. In addition, the bay’s management board will also monitor the number of swimmers and divers to avoid putting too much stress on the ecosystem. |
3. Painting for a Cause: Student Art Exhibition to Protect Wildlife An exhibition entitled ‘Paint for wildlife’ will be held in Ha Noi next week. It will include more than 30 paintings by secondary school students across the country. Visitors will also have the opportunity to meet the young artists and discuss the stories behind their beautiful paintings. All of them will be on sale to raise money for the protection of vulnerable species. The event organisers hope to raise public awareness of wildlife conservation through art and contribute to efforts to save rare and endangered animals. |

[I] Each year, several organizations publish lists of world’s most livable cities. [II] They look at various factors to compile their lists: a stable government, low crime rates, efficient public transportation, and quality healthcare. [III] The top-ranking cities also often feature proximity to nature, attractive architecture, access to cultural spots like museums, pleasant weather, and clean surroundings. [IV]
For residents of these cities, life is generally great. However, even the best cities have some issues. In addition, approximately half of the world’s population lives in cities with a lower quality of life. These people may dream of migrating somewhere better, but this isn’t always an option. A more practical alternative is for these people to find a way to improve the quality of life in their own communities.
Erik Ahlström provides a good example of this kind of personal action. Several years ago, he moved to Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. In general, Stockholm has an excellent quality of life. Nevertheless, Ahlström couldn’t turn a blind eye to the litter scattered on the streets. He decided to combine picking up the trash with jogging. He called this new activity ‘plogging’ and soon other people were helping him. The idea has become so popular that people now go plogging in communities all over the world.
Mary Clear and Pam Warhurst offer another inspiring example. They live in Todmorden, a small town in northem England. They found some areas of land nobody was using and began growing vegetables, fruit, and herbs. Their idea was that local residents could pick and eat them. Word of their ‘incredible edible’ initiative quickly spread, and people wanted to know more. Todmorden now has so many visitors that residents there joke that they have invented a new form of tourism called ‘vegetable tourism’.
